Who's Planning Our Next War?

Of the Axis-of-Evil nations named in his State of the Union in 2002, President Bush has often said, "The United States will not permit the world's most dangerous regimes to threaten us with the world's most destructive weapons."

He failed with North Korea. Will he accept failure in Iran, though there is no hard evidence Iran has an active nuclear weapons program?

William Kristol of The Weekly Standard said Sunday a U.S. attack on Iran after the election is more likely should Barack Obama win. Presumably, Bush would trust John McCain to keep Iran nuclear free.

Yet, to start a third war in the Middle East against a nation three times as large as Iraq, and leave it to a new president to fight, would be a daylight hijacking of the congressional war power and a criminally irresponsible act. For Congress alone has the power to authorize war.

Yet Israel is even today pushing Bush into a pre-emptive war with a naked threat to attack Iran itself should Bush refuse the cup.

In April, Israel held a five-day civil defense drill. In June, Israel sent 100 F-15s and F-16s, with refueling tankers and helicopters to pick up downed pilots, toward Greece in a simulated attack, a dress rehearsal for war. The planes flew 1,400 kilometers, the distance to Iran's uranium enrichment facility at Natanz.

Ehud Olmert came home from a June meeting with Bush to tell Israelis: "We reached agreement on the need to take care of the Iranian threat. ... I left with a lot less question marks regarding the means, the timetable restrictions and American resoluteness. ...

"George Bush understands the severity of the Iranian threat and the need to vanquish it, and intends to act on the matter before the end of his term. ... The Iranian problem requires urgent attention, and I see no reason to delay this just because there will be a new president in the White House seven and a half months from now."

If Bush is discussing war on Iran with Ehud Olmert, why is he not discussing it with Congress or the nation?

On June 6, Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz threatened, "If Iran continues its nuclear weapons program, we will attack it." The price of oil shot up 9 percent.

Is Israel bluffing – or planning to attack Iran if America balks?

Previous air strikes on the PLO command in Tunis, on the Osirak reactor in Iraq and on the presumed nuclear reactor site in Syria last September give Israel a high degree of credibility.
Still, attacking Iran would be no piece of cake.
Israel lacks the stealth and cruise-missile capacity to degrade Iran's air defenses systematically and no longer has the element of surprise. Israeli planes and pilots would likely be lost.
Israel also lacks the ability to stay over the target or conduct follow-up strikes. The U.S. Air Force bombed Iraq for five weeks with hundreds of daily runs in 1991 before Gen. Schwarzkopf moved.

Moreover, if Iran has achieved the capacity to enrich uranium, she has surely moved centrifuges to parts of the country that Israel cannot reach – and can probably replicate anything lost.

Israel would also have to over-fly Turkey, or Syria and U.S.-occupied Iraq, or Saudi Arabia to reach Natanz. Turks, Syrians and Saudis would deny Israel permission and might resist. For the U.S. military to let Israel over-fly Iraq would make us an accomplice. How would that sit with the Europeans who are supporting our sanctions on Iran and want the nuclear issue settled diplomatically?

And who can predict with certitude how Iran would respond?

Would Iran attack Israel with rockets, inviting retaliation with Jericho and cruise missiles from Israeli submarines? Would she close the Gulf with suicide-boat attacks on tankers and U.S. warships?

With oil at $135 a barrel, Israeli air strikes on Iran would seem to ensure a 2,000-point drop in the Dow and a world recession.

What would Hamas, Hezbollah and Syria do? All three are now in indirect negotiations with Israel. U.S. forces in Afghanistan and Iraq could be made by Iran to pay a high price in blood that could force the United States to initiate its own air war in retaliation, and to finish a war Israel had begun. But a U.S. war on Iran is not a decision Bush can outsource to Ehud Olmert.

Tuesday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Adm. Michael Mullins left for Israel. CBS News cited U.S. officials as conceding the trip comes "just as the Israelis are mounting a full court press to get the Bush administration to strike Iran's nuclear complex."

Vice President Cheney is said to favor U.S. strikes. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Mullins are said to be opposed.

Moving through Congress, powered by the Israeli lobby, is House Resolution 362, which demands that President Bush impose a U.S. blockade of Iran, an act of war.

Comparing Two Very Different Jewish Groups

Zev Chafets’s description of the Syrian Jewish community in Brooklyn fits almost perfectly with the theory and data in A People That Shall Dwell Alone. The SY’s (pronounced ess-why), as they call themselves, are a hermetically sealed community that is deeply concerned with preserving its ethnic purity. They immigrated from Syria early in the 20th century and found themselves in a society that tended to break down the walls of separation.

Socializing with outgroup members or marrying them was not really an option in the Middle East where the norm is to form self-segregating groups that marry only among themselves. Disturbed at an increasing tendency to socialize with other Jews and even non-Jews, in 1935 the rabbis created “an iron wall of self-separation around the community.” At the heart of the wall was an edict against intermarriage: “No male or female member of our community has the right to intermarry with non-Jews; this law covers conversion, which we consider to be fictitious and valueless.”

This effectively cut out the conversion loophole. It reminds us that even though conversion was always a theoretical option in Judaism, it was not really a practical possibility in the Middle Eastern societies where Judaism originated. Social segregation into endogamous groups has always been the norm in the Middle East. As noted in a previous blog, conversion for the Orthodox who control Israeli practices is a grueling process.

The SY’s are quite candid on the function of the edict. Jakie Kassin, a community leader, summarized it as follows: “Never accept a convert or a child born of a convert. … Push them away with strong hands from our community. Why? Because we don’t want gentile characteristics.”

It’s refreshing to see such unabashed concern with preserving his own ethnic characteristics from a respected community leader in this day and age. This is the sort of thing that can get a European-American ostracized and probably unemployed, especially if he or she has a publically visible role in the media. It’s the sort of thing that The New York Times could be expected to be especially exercised about if such sentiments came from someone like me. But it appears here in The New York Times Magazine as barely more noteworthy than the fact that the SY’s live in Brooklyn.

Even other Jews are not accepted as kosher until their genealogy has been intensely scrutinized: “Any outsider who wants to marry into a Syrian family ― even a fellow Jew ― is subject to thorough genealogical investigation. That means producing proof, going back at least three generations and attested to by an Orthodox rabbi, of the candidates’ kosher bona fides. This disqualifies the vast majority of American Jews, who have no such proof.” Finding a non-Jew anywhere in the family tree is enough to prevent the marriage.

The SY community is also very collectivist. Businesses are family affairs, and children live close to their parents. Secular education is de-emphasized because it might lead the young away from the community. A young man who returned to the community after going to college notes, “It’s a magical place. … You come home from school and there are 10 women in the kitchen, your mother and aunts and cousins, cooking special Syrian delicacies. Every celebration is large, full of relatives.” And when he eventually leaves the community by marrying a non-Jew, his parents are unforgiving. He complains “My parents have sacrificed their relationship with me for the sake of the community.” It’s a “warm and loving community ― if you follow the rules.”

Like all collectivist communities, there is a high level of social support and charity to the less prosperous: “Being an SY means never having to say you are hungry.” Social status comes partly by competing to contribute to SY charity. And with collectivism goes high fertility. SY’s “have large families, five or six children. And only a tiny fraction of our kids leave.”

So I certainly could have included the SY in several chapters of A People That Shall Dwell Alone. But I didn’t find anything that would be useful for The Culture of Critique. In fact, it’s striking that “traditionally, the SY’s haven’t voted much, largely because of an aversion to showing up on government registries.” Say what??? The only quasi confirmation of an alleged Israeli airstrike against Syria, apparently carried out on 6 September, has come from anonymous defence officials in the United States, who have said that a "quick" strike was carried out to send a message to Damascus not to continue supporting Hezbollah, with which Israel fought a war last year.

Continuing the official wall of silence, American Israeli President Shimon Peres on Tuesday refused to comment on the September 6 incident after which Syria said its air defences had fired at Israeli warplanes deep inside its territory.

Syria has filed an official complaint with the United Nations over the mysterious attack, but has likewise remained tight-lipped over the details. With scant official information available, most of the speculation over the strike has been in foreign media reports, which first said the raid was aimed at weapons financed by Israel's arch-enemy Iran.

But over the past week, more and more reports have alleged that the strike was aimed at either a nuclear facility or nuclear material provided by North Korea. Syrian official media have blasted such reports as "lies" that could be used as a pretext for attacking Damascus, and on Tuesday the North Korean foreign minister also rejected the allegations.

"Recently some US media including the New York Times have been spreading allegations that we are secretly helping Syria with its nuclear programme. Such reports are groundless and misleading," a ministry spokesman said.

"We, as a responsible nuclear power, already declared in October 2006 that we will never allow the transfer of nuclear materials, and we have been sticking to this declaration," the spokesman said in a statement published by the official Korean Central News Agency.

"Allegations about secret nuclear cooperation are nothing but a clumsy plot set up again by vicious forces who do not want progress in North Korea-US relations and six-party talks," he said.

The United States has long accused North Korea, which carried out a nuclear weapons test in October 2006, of weapons proliferation. American officials have also charged Syria with bankrolling terrorism groups in the Middle East. US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has said his country would have a "real problem" if Syria and North Korea were collaborating on a nuclear programme.

Israel Bombs Syria, Neocons Cheer

Obviously, the rush to war―or unprovoked mass murder―is not going fast enough for Israel. “Israel believes that North Korea has been supplying Syria and Iran with nuclear materials, a Washington defense official told the New York Times,” Yedioth Internet reports. “The official added that recent Israeli reconnaissance flights over Syria revealed possible nuclear installations that Israeli officials estimate might have been supplied with material from North Korea.”

It appears this ruse is a cover for Israel’s latest provocation―an airstrike against “a Syrian-Iranian missile base in northern Syria that was financed by Iran,” according to a Nazareth-based Israeli Arab newspaper. Imagine Syria and Iran launching strikes against an Israeli missile base stocked by the United States (Israel receives $3 billion a year in military “assistance,” with about $1.8 billion a year in Foreign Military Financing grants from the Department of Defense, according to the Arms Trade Resource Center). Such an attack and violation of national sovereignty would be slapped across the front page of the aforementioned New York Times in 72 point blood red type while neocons would be slavering for retribution, i.e., demanding the mass murder of Syrian and Iranian grandmothers and grade schoolers.

In addition, reports the Canadian Press, “Israel is keeping troops along the Syrian border on high alert” and “there have been no signs that Syria is preparing for war after the alleged incident.” Of course, a military response by Syria would be welcome by the Israeli Jabotinskyites and their neocon collaborators, especially during Rosh Hashana.

As should be expected, Syria has complained to the United Nations, a useless reaction as the U.N. does the bidding of its master, even though over the years the supposedly august body has issued 131 resolutions condemning various Israeli crimes, including repeated violations of Syrian, Jordanian, and Lebanese sovereignty (and the quite routine acts of stealing Palestinian land, slaughtering Palestinian school children en masse, and targeting United Nations observers).

Predictably, Israel’s Arab and Muslim hating Jabotinskyite leaders are “very happy with the success of the operation,” apparently involving “Israeli ground forces who directed the air strike,” that is to say not only aircraft but soldiers violated Syrian sovereignty. In addition, the U.S. neocons “are happy to have Israel carry the message to both Syria and Iran that they can get in and out and strike when necessary,” according to Haaretz. On the other hand, we can assume to neocons, often more fanatical than their Israeli brethren, are unhappy with the fact Israel did not bomb Damascus and president Assad’s summer palace.

Israel National News: Arab Media Reports Syria Making Preparations for War with Israel

A Qatari newspaper, Al Watan, reported Friday that Syria is making concrete preparations for war with Israel, saying that the Syrian government has removed the Government and State Archives from the Damascus area. According to the paper, this move indicates preparations for war.

Syrian parliament member Muhammad Habash confirmed on Al-Jazeera Arabic world news satellite TV last week that Syria is indeed engaged in active preparations for a war with Israel. The conflict, said the Syrian MP, is expected to break out during the summer months.

Officials close to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert reported Sunday that their efforts to begin negotiations with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad have gone unanswered. They also said that Mr. Assad’s failure to reply signaled that his claims of wanting peace were not honest and were meant to improve his own status in the international community.

Last week, the head of Mossad, Israel’s international intelligence agency, Meir Dagan, warned that Syrian President Assad was putting up a smoke screen by claiming he wants to open peace talks with the Jewish State.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi has also raised the issue numerous times. “The IDF is preparing for an escalation on both the Palestinian and the northern fronts,” he said bluntly during a speech to the IDF Officers Training School earlier in the year.

The IDF held a large-scale exercise ten days ago simulating a Syrian invasion to Israel’s north. Infantry units, tank divisions and the Air Force took part in the exercise, which took place at the Shizafon IDF installation, in the southern Negev.

Asked about the exercise by Army Radio, Defense Minister Amir Peretz said that the IDF was indeed preparing for the possibility of war with Syria, but said this does not mean that Israel would initiate such a war. "Our preparedness is not an indication of any decision by either us or Syria to go to war - these are purely defensive measures," he said.

Israel Behind The 1975 Lebanon Civil War

Almost inevitably, civil war between the Arab Lebanese and the Phalangists finally broke out in 1975, with more than a little help from Israel. In 1982, under the pretext of curbing attacks on Israeli troops by the Palestinian PLO in Lebanon, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin ordered the Israeli army to invade. In a weeklong orgy of bloodletting, then Defence Minister and current Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ordered his troops to encircle the Lebanese refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila giving the Maronite Phalangists free reign to murder at will. Figures vary, but somewhere between 1,700 and 3,000 Palestinians, most of them innocent civlians, were mercilessly butchered in response to the murder of Israeli-backed Christian Lebanese President-elect Bashir Gemayel.

When a horrified world demanded an explanation of Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, who himself had committed indiscriminate terror in his youth, he said without a word of regret: "Goyim kill Goyim and they blame the Jew."

Despite Israel's denials of responsibility, New York Times correspondent Thomas L. Friedman declared without qualification: "The Israelis knew just what they were doing when they let the Phalangists into those camps."

Sharon and seven other Israeli officials, including Begin, were found guilty the next year by an Israeli commission of "indirect responsibility" for the massacres. Sharon was also found to have "personal responsibility," and he was ordered to resign or be removed as defense minister. Sharon resigned, protesting his innocence, but he was allowed to stay in the cabinet as a minister without portfolio.

The union of the Christian Lebanese and the Israelis has indeed been a long and sordid one and it should come as no surprise that current Lebanese Christian politicians have been quick to join the US and Israel in immediately asserting that Syria was to blame for the murder of Hariri.

Hariri Rebuilt Lebanon

By all accounts, Hariri was one of the few "men of peace" left in the Middle East. In his two terms as Lebanese PM since 1990, he had brought Lebanon out of the carnage wrought by 15 years of civil war and set it well on the way to reclaiming its status as the "Paris of the Middle East." Hariri willingly expended his personal fortune on Lebanon's recovery pouring millions into the reconstruction of Beirut. Viewed as a leading Arab-world reformer, he was also credited with restoring Lebanon's reputation abroad as a liberal, open Middle Eastern country. He paid for the 1989 Christian-Muslim peace conference in Taif, Saudi Arabia, which laid the foundation for the ceasefire that came a year later. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Harari also made it his goal to ensure that the religious divisions (Christian and Islamic) were kept out of politics.

When you think of Israel, what are the first thoughts that come to mind? Belagured? Threatened? Only democracy in the Middle East? A vanguard for Western Democracy in its battle to stem the tide of rampant Arab terrorism? Rightful homeland of all "Jews"? If these thoughts come to mind when you think of the state of Israel, then the IDF and/or the Mossad have an opening you might be interested in. My point is that Israel, in its current incarnation as an illegal and ultimately untenable statelet, far from seeking the eradication of "terrorism", finds itself in the paradoxical postion of NEEDING a permanent threat to its existence in order for it to continue to exist and expand its borders into Arab lands.

Which is where the Israeli intelligence agency Mo$$ad comes in.

Mossad's motto is "by way of deception thou shalt wage war" and all of the evidence points to their taking their motto absolutely literally. Over the years, Mossad has worked tirelessly to further the 'interests' of Israel and has made extensive use of False Flag operations to create the appearance that Israel is surrounded by terrorist regimes. From the demonisation of Saddam leading up to the first Gulf War, to the 9/11 attacks, nothing, it seems, is a bridge too far for the world's most ruthless and bloodthirsty intelligence agency.

David Duke, perhaps America's most Courageous Radio-redacteur and Braveheart Anti-Imperialist, has finally found a country that welcomes him: Syria.

The Syrian government last week rolled out the red carpet for Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, one-time Louisiana State Representative, and author of a vicious screed called Jewish Supremacism: My Awakening to the Jewish Question.

Duke addressed a rally that was broadcast on Syrian government television (he told the crowd that New York and Washington, DC are "occupied by the Zionists"), held a press conference alongside members of the Syrian parliament, and basked in the lavish praise of the Grand Mufti of Syria, the country's top Islamic religious leader, who praised Duke's "courage" and his "message of peace.” A photo of a beaming Duke with two Syrian officials now headlines his web site.

It's not hard to see why Duke was pleased to be in Syria. Pariahs crave legitimacy. The fact that a government, any government, is willing to befriend him is welcome news to the former Klansman. It's the same reason that Kurt Waldheim, when he was declared persona non grata by the United States in 1987 because of the revelations about his Nazi past, desperately sought countries that would invite him to visit (Egypt, Jordan and the Vatican were the only ones to do so).

So, it's not hard to understand why Duke eagerly embraced Syria. But why did Syria embrace Duke?

I posed that question to a colleague of mine, an academic who enjoys close relations with various Arab officials and who himself visited Syria not long ago. I found his explanation less than persuasive.

"The United States has pushed the Syrians into a corner," he said. "This is their way of responding." He was referring to the Bush administration's strong criticism of Syria for its role in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and for its reported sheltering of Iraqi terrorists and Iraqis who took part in Saddam Hussein's war crimes.

But is it really fair to blame President George Bush for Syria's invitation to David Duke?

The fact is that Syria's soft spot for Nazis, neo-Nazis and Holocaust-deniers long predates the current policies of the Bush administration.

More than fifty years before Syria began sheltering Iraqi war criminals, it was sheltering Nazi war criminals. Israeli military intelligence reports during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war were filled with references to the presence of Nazis among the Syrian forces attacking northern Israel. Some of them served as commanding officers.

The names of prominent Nazis living in Syria began to surface during the 1950s and 1960s. One was SS Captain Theodor Dannecker, who helped Adolf Eichmann implement Hitler's genocide policy in France, Bulgaria and Hungary. Another was Karl Rademacher, a senior Eichmann aide who had been involved in the mass murder of Jews from Belgium, Holland, Croatia and elsewhere. After World War II, Rademacher escaped Allied capture by fleeing to Syria, where he became an official in the Syrian Secret Service.

The most notorious of the Nazis granted asylum in Syria was another top Eichmann aide, SS Lieutenant Alois Brunner. After being convicted in France in 1954 of responsibility for the murders of more than 100,000 Jews, Brunner disappeared. Two decades later, the famed French Nazi-hunters Serge and Beate Klarsfeld tracked down Brunner in Damascus, where he was making a comfortable living as an adviser to the Syrian intelligence services. And he is apparently still there.

Not that sheltering the perpetrators of the Holocaust has stopped the Syrians from denying that the Holocaust took place. Indeed, the Syrian government-controlled media's take on the Holocaust sounds like it could have been scripted by David Duke. The daily newspaper Tishrin has described the Holocaust as "a Jewish lie," while the Syria Times has called the gas chambers "a myth." Damascus Radio has accused world Jewry of spreading "the myth of the Nazi ovens" in order to extort reparations money from Germany and Switzerland.

Why, then, did Syria invite David Duke? Perhaps the answer is not to be found in sophisticated analyses of international diplomatic developments, nor in partisan assumptions that somehow it must be President Bush's fault. Perhaps the answer is to be found simply by glancing at Syria's sixty-year-old record of hostility toward Jews and Israel, and affection for those who share that hostility.

U.S.-Syrian relations hit a low Tuesday as Washington withdrew its ambassador from Damascus in the aftermath of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and renewed calls for Syria to withdraw occupation troops from the country.

The White House said Ambassador Margaret Scobey gave the Syrians a stern message Monday detailing U.S. displeasure with Syria's occupation of southern Lebanon and "unhelpful" behavior in other Middle East matters.
Sources told United Press international it's those unspecified behaviors -- mainly Syria's support for terrorists who could derail progress in Israeli-Palestinian peace prospects -- that is fueling renewed U.S. heat on the regime of Bashar Assad.
"Syria is up to it eyeballs in terrorism," said a diplomat, who requested anonymity. "(Syria-supported) Hezbollah is working right now very, very intensively to either discourage or to foil the new process that is taking place between the Israelis and the Palestinians and have even threatened Abu Mazen (Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas) personally."
The source said over the past 18 months there had been an increase in financing, directing and training of Palestinians in southern Lebanon by the Syrian-backed organization.
Abbas, whose nom de guerre is Abu Mazen, has promised to crack down on attacks on Israel in an effort to move peace talks forward. So far he appears to have achieved some success, but he is walking a tightrope with Palestinian radicals.
Abbas's apparent sincerity has helped bring renewed hope of a possible peace settlement with Israel that would lead to a separate and independent Palestinian state.
Hezbollah is a considered to be a terrorist organization and is supported by Syria and Iran. However, it is seen in Lebanon as a political party and is represented in the Lebanese parliament.
They are accused of running terrorist training camps in areas ostensibly under the control of Syrian troops and have engaged Israeli forces in an Israeli-occupied an area known as "the Shebaa Farms." Hezbollah claims the land belongs to Lebanon; Israel says it is Syrian.
Israel has accused Hezbollah of training and funding Palestinian Islamists organizations such as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, sources said.
Hezbollah receives not only protection from the Syrians but also funding. Syria, analysts said, acts as a conduit for arms and is a transit point for Palestinian militants traveling to and from the training camps.
"The Middle East peace process pays very heavily into it (new tensions)," added former U.S. Ambassador Edward Walker, now head of the Middle East Institute in Washington. "Syria, if it so chooses, can pull the strings of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah, and I think that is why the administration is trying to use the Hariri assassination as a pressure point on the Syrians without any clear evidence of a smoking gun" linking them to the killing.
Hariri, who helped rebuild Lebanon after 15 years of civil war, was killed in a bombing in West Beirut Monday after a meeting in Parliament. The rags-to-riches businessman had served at least 10 years as prime minister but resigned in October. He was a strong advocate for Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon and a rallying figure for those opposed to the pro-Syrian government of President Emile Lahoud.
The White House condemned the killing in the strongest language and said it served as a reminder that Lebanon needs to be independent and free of foreign forces.
"I don't have any update in terms of the investigation into who was responsible for carrying out this horrible terrorist attack on former Prime Minister Hariri," spokesman Scott McClellan said Tuesday. "What I do want to make clear is that Syria's troop presence in Lebanon is a destabilizing force.
"The people of Lebanon should be allowed to control their future free from outside interference and free from terrorism."
No group or country has been definitely tied to the assassination, but there was widespread feeling in Lebanon that Damascus was behind it.
"I think most Lebanese think Syria is involved," said James Phillips, a Middle East expert at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank. "There is a history here. Syria did engineer the assassination of Bachir Gemayel, the president-elect of Lebanon in 1982."
