Androscoggin River Report

Water temp 72.27 F Flow Rate 1669 CFS @ Mead WestVaco in Rumford.

I have been busy guiding. and have had some excellent fishing both for Bass and Trout!

I guided for four days trollng the Rangeley lakes and even with the temps in the 90’s and high humidity. My clients caught several Salmon. There was a good even mix of what appeared to be young fish in the one to two pound class, as well as four Salmon that were three pounds or more!

Fishing the Androscoggin has held up well during the warm weather. I had a party from Philadelphia. We fished the river below Bethel and in a five mile float caught Rainbows, Browns and Smallies. The fish averaged 15 to 12 inches with some bigger Bass caught. They were striking hard in the fast water riffles from the time we put in and started the float till almost down to our take out. It didn’t seem to matter what was used, drys, streamers, or a Mepps spinner. The fish hit with equal aggression.

I fished with another party for Bass below Dixfield and caught so many fish that we lost count! My clients took at least three Bass that were three plus pounds. They had several other fish on that would jump and throw the hook that were bigger, How they throw the hook is a marvel to watch as they come three feet out of the water on the strike!!!!

I am amazed that for years people have called Smallies feces species. It is a great fighting fish that warrants higher regard.

We had our best luck using any lure that was chartreuse. It didn’t matter what whether it was a crank bait or a wiggle worm.

Now is the time to plan a fall trip on the River as the water temp drops into the Golden Fifties the fishing will get better and better. When you fish always remember to fish the entire water column. Think volume.

A man should believe in some thing….I believe I’ll go fishing.
