Rangeley Lakes Region Fishing Report

The Quimby Pond Caddis are here! It's been a very late evening hatch. If you were there at the right time, you probably caught some really nice trout, as long as you did not get caught in the thunderstorms.

On Thursday evening I guided Ed Hemmingsen, a retired Florida Keys flats guide, 85years young, and quite a fly fisherman. Many young fishermen would be envious of his casting and handling of large brook trout! He landed a brookie exceeding 18", approximately 3lb. released, and another nice trout in the 16" range before the thunder and lightning chased us off the pond. Our fishing was limited to one hour!

Rangeley Lake is still producing some fish, but the fishing is not as fast as last week. Magalloway River fly hatches have been good, both caddis and may flies showing and fish are receptive.

Thursday during the day I fished with Mike Shellman and friend Dick, we fished the Kennebago River, Mike being an excellent fly caster, caught in excess of 30 trout and salmon on the upper river. The fish were not large, 16" being tops, but the fishing was fast and fun, all on dry flies. Let's hope the fishing continues to be good and the weather favorable.

Tight lines, Ray
