My dog managed to rip off the pad on the bottom of his foot. I am putting antibiotic ointment and wrapping with gauze. Anything else I should be doing or do I need to take him to the vet?

Your best bet is to take your pet to the vet. Since I haven't seen the wound, I can't comment on whether he needs oral antibiotics. Your vet will also be able to instruct you on how often to change the bandages and what to look for should complications arise.
