Surprises

I have an old claw foot tub that I was bathing in last night, when I got a knock on the door. It was almost dark when I looked out the upstairs window to see someone, I did not know standing on the porch deck. He said I had left my shop door open and he would close it for me. I was surprised and thanked him. The Prairie Falcons are here nesting again outside my bedroom window. I have a new family of Magpies nesting in a broken-down Blue Ash tree. Magpies are cleaver birds that take shiny things and build tops over their nests then enter their nests through the side. I bought this piece of high desert bare ground when I first returned to Mountain Home, after being gone for 10 years. I built a house and planted trees. The Elm trees are now 60 to 80 feet tall. I had a guy come over and ask about the trees. I told him I planted them each and every one. He said that wasn't possible because the trees were too tall. I then asked him who planted these trees? He said they must have been planted from an old homestead. I am sure I will need to remember that. Another time a woman came here and was looking at the old photos on the refrigerator. She asked who the woman was. I told her this was my wife. She said it wasn't my wife. I asked her who it was. She said she didn't know, but it wasn't my wife. I then asked her if the boys in the picture my boys. She said they were. I was surprised and pleased to learn this. This morning I found a horned owl sitting in a Fir tree outside my kitchen window. He is still there. I have had owls here before. I found their pellets and heard them call for mates at night. I have only seen one before in the early morning first light. One was sitting on my totem pole the day I heard that Dennis Weatherall died. The VA hospital has scheduled me for a heart tune up later this month. Red says the owl is here because this place is a bird buffet. I think this is just a young owl in training. If things go south, I won't need an escort to the Spirit in the Sky. I am a scout, you know, and I can find my own way. Life is good.
