Re: Is 'Lawrence' his surname?!

Robert
\\\\\\"Hayward\\\\\\" is his surname.

one of the main reasons Lawrence gave for ditching it was to discourage people from asking him if he was related to Justin Hayward

This is the likely reason, though it\\\\\\'s common to see Nick Heyward given as the reason.

I know the Dave McCullough review you\\\\\\'re talking about... it still exists here in the pictures section. I assume either McCullough made a mistake, or Lawrence hadn\\\\\\'t settled on his identity at that time.

The Versatile Newts single, made by Lawrence and Nick Gilbert, is credited on the sleeve to Gilbert and \\\\\\"New Noise\\\\\\". This shows that Lawrence was playing with pseudonyms in the very early days of Felt. Maybe he was \\\\\\"Jon Lawrence\\\\\\" at one point.
Wasn't Dave McCullough the journalist who gave 'Index' Single of the Week in Sounds? I wondered if seeing that he was a fan from very early on, he might know something we don't, but playing around with pseudonyms certainly sounds far more likely.

When did the surname start to slip out?

I notice on the back page of this week's Shortlist magazine (for those that don't know, it's a free magazine widely distributed in the UK), there's an interview with Nicky Wire, who talks about his love of 'Goldmine Trash'. Though he refers to the work of Lawrence, the editor has inserted (Haywood) in brackets. So to anyone who is reading for the first time about the band, they'll just assume that he is Lawrence Haywood to everyone - a tiny bit of mystique pulled away:-(

Re: Is 'Lawrence' his surname?!

Yes, it was McCullough who awarded them with Single of the Week.

When did the surname start to slip out?

That's a good question... I'm sure there must be something earlier but the New Musical Express article "Look Back in Wrangler" from 1996 explicitly exposes Lawrence's surname.

(Links to this piece in the Articles section seem to be broken so here is the text.)

Thanks for the link to the Tumblr site - is it yours?

I was going to post a message to here asking if anyone had the full NME 1986 interview, the scan linked from this site only seemed to be some of it, and I was never sure how much was missing.

Loads it turns out.

So that was a nice surprise and a good read on the way home last night:-)

Re: Is 'Lawrence' his surname?!

Acording to this:
http://www.tangents.co.uk/tangents/archive/main/felt.html

Lawrence used the stage name Jon Lawrence, probably for a time, then dropped "his" first name.
