Tarblooders

Folks have asked where does the name Tarblooders
originate.? Tarblooder is a railroad term, specifically defining a railroad builder who
cemented the ties down, using boiling tar.
The Glenville area had many tar pits before the
turn of the 20th century, and furnished tar for
the building of early eastern railroads. The
railroad man who cemented the railroad ties down,
was totally covered except for his face. The specks of tar would fly into his face and cut it. It was
a sweaty hard job...and at the end of the day the
railroad builder would have a bloody face from the
tar cuts and would appear to be sweating blood.
He was called a TARBLOODER by his railroad buddies.
