Just Hot

In spite of this oppressive heat, fishing has held up remarkably well in many areas. It actually brought on a wonderful Drake hatch on Kennebago Lake and other area ponds/lakes. Next we may expect some Hexagenia in some limited parts of the region, but always a treat on those bodies that have them in good quantity. A couple of pals have been here on vacation and had some great fun, enjoying in several instances some four pound (plus/minus) Brook Trout and similar Salmon. I know they work at it, so it's hard to begrudge them some success, and in ALL cases the fish went back into the river for others to enjoy again!!! The Rapid continues to produce well, and there's one more week of weekend kayak flows on the Magalloway before it shifts for four weeks to the Rapid. In the mean time, try yur luck after the flows drop on a Monday or Tuesday. Not always a guarantee, but often it is real productive then. It'll depend on the regular flow levels, but 350 cfs and less on the Magalloway would be ideal conditions. Time to watch for some significant stonefly migrations (casings along the rocky edges of the rivers), and the large adult females bouncing around laying their next generations. The forecast has no significant rain predicted which is unfortunate, but at least it is supposed to be cooler and less humid. Now that the 4th has passed, it'll be less crowded, so come enjoy the beautiful mountain vistas - and they tell me the new Thai restaurant at the Evergreen Golf Club is top notch, so there's even more incentive to get out.
