i have always wanted to be a tatt artist.


i am trying to figure out what all i need to do i know this may sound a litle stupid for me to be asking this but...how do i start off? i know i need to be an apprentice but how old would i have to be to start? i mean really! i want to do this! I've been trying to find aout the answer to these and alot of other questions about being a tattoo artist but i don't know anyone to talk to about it,... hopefully you guys will take me seriously. I am pretty good at tribal art, and i have sold a few of my designs to people. i just need to know where to start out so point me in the right direction ,k please email me if you know anyone that can help me or if you can help... thanx, Kitty

I'VE BEEN TATTOOING FOR 14 YEARS . KIDS COME INTO MY SHOP EVERY WEEK THINKING THEY WOULD BE GREAT AT IT . I WORK IN MANY OTHER MEDIUMS AS WELL AND TATTOOING IS BY FARE THE TOUGHEST . MY ADVICE IF THIS IS WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO ,GO GET LOT S OF TATTOOS BY DIFFRENT ARTIST . A TATTOOIST IS MORE LIKELY TO GIVE OUT INFO IF THERE GETTING PAID. THE ONLY OTHER THING I CAN THINK OF IS START DATING A TATTOOIST.

Hey Kitty! You have to be 18 in most states to enter a tattoo shop, so 18 could be considered the age requirement for being an apprentice. What you do is go around to shops and find out if anyone has room for an apprentice. The shop will usually charge you about $2500 and you have to work for free, for tips or for very little $ for about one to two years. Every shop is different. I know of one shop here in TX that charges $10,000 and makes you work free for 3 years!!! Once you have your apprenticeship done, you will have a decent portfolio, then if you can't or don't want to stay at the shop you apprenticed at, you can take your portfolio and find a new job! What I DON'T recommend is getting some equipment and just tattooing out of your basement or house until you get a portfolio together. Safety and sterility are very important and you don't want to risk anything, especially your integrity. Good luck!!
