The opportunity
The Office of Development Effectiveness (ODE) within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) evaluates the effectiveness of the Australian aid program, supports evaluation practice across DFAT, and quality assures internal performance assessments of the aid program.
ODE is structurally independent from DFAT aid management and its work is overseen by an independent board to ensure it is robust, credible and impartial.

Our ideal candidate
As an Executive Level 2, Director you will be capable of leading evaluations of complex programs. You will have experience applying a range of qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods, excellent project management skills, and the ability to lead evaluation teams including contracted evaluation team members. You will also have the ability to produce high quality evaluation documents, including published evaluation reports and summaries, which deliver evaluation findings in a succinct and compelling manner. You will be able to communicate difficult concepts in writing and orally.
You will have the ability to lead a small team of ODE staff. You will simultaneously oversee multiple evaluations or performance assessments managed by these staff. You will mentor and provide advice to ODE staff on the conduct of high quality, timely evaluations and performance assessments.
As part of ODE’s leadership team, you will influence ODE’s strategic direction and assist in the establishment of work priorities. You will actively identify and manage risks to ODE’s work portfolio and reputation. You will strengthen ODE’s capacity to deliver high quality evaluations.
You will be client-focussed and have the ability to provide high quality advice to a wide range of stakeholders, including the managers of aid programs, ODE’s independent board and DFAT senior managers. You will be able to deliver challenging messages to stakeholders in a manner which builds ODE’s credibility.
Preferably, you will have an understanding of evaluation/ performance management policies and systems and how they can be applied in large organisations to ensure high quality evaluations are conducted and used.
