Data Science Support Consultancy

Data Science Support Consultancy (3 months)

Context of the role

Girl Effect Mobile is a global digital platform, connecting girls to inspiring content in 61 countries and 26 languages. Developed in partnership with Facebook's Free Basics initiative, Girl Effect Mobile provides a platform that connects girls to vital information, entertaining content and to each other. By increasing girls' basic knowledge about health, education, financial security and safety, and enabling them to share stories and communicate with experts and mentors, Girl Effect Mobile is helping build their self-confidence and ability to overcome cultural barriers.

GEM want to build up a community of empowered individuals giving the opportunity to the user to be able to leave comments, take a poll or survey, connect with experts on Q&A sessions, among others.

Since its launch in January 2015, Girl Effect Mobile has reached more than 20 million unique users, and the platform continues to explore new ways to create positive behaviour change for girls.

Girl Effect London is seeking a consultant to dive into our database, exploring existing data for 70+ sites and pointing out trends and user behavior patterns in order to establish a data framework to guide business decisions for the Girl Effect Mobile product. The role of the consultant will include identifying gaps and tools, establishing data protocols, and establishing optimal ways to present data for uptake and immediate use.

The central question that the data scientist will help us solve is: how can we maximise the amount of time that our users spend on our site, with the aim that these users will gain information needed to report changes in knowledge, attitudes and behaviour? During the timeframe of this consultancy, the platform will also pilot several interactive tools, and the data scientist will help us understand the uptake and efficacy of these tools and how these alter the user’s journey on the platform.

In addition to the GEM site, Girl Effect has offices in Rwanda, Ethiopia and Malawi that build and manage localized youth brands with an extensive media portfolio of radio, magazine, and digital (social media, mobile sites, SMS, USSD, and IVR) channels. We have been conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis of inbound sms messages to track engagement and performance of our text-in line. We are interested in better understanding what this data is telling us about our audience, how to better conduct analysis of our sms channels (soon to include IVR), and what the value of that data is to a brand aiming to driver deeper engagement with its audience.

Data sets available to the consultant will include Google Analytics data for 70+ sites; poll, survey and reaction results; complementary databases and participation data from interactive features, as well as incoming SMS messages.
