007
Andrew Great review of a great film: if you can say that about government-sanctioned murders. I'm a Bond fan from way back - all the books (Fleming); all the films (not the 1st Casino Royale) - and I also think that Craig is remarkable as 007. Bond is a guilty pleasure, especially in these times when we know too much to say that he is helping to protect our country with his licensed status. Casino Royale shows that his heart can be touched (as did OHMSS) but he is thwarted by the death of a loved one...a recurring pattern since his childhood. His life could be seen as a sacrifice - for Queen and Country, and all that. Is he any worse than Leonard Cheshire, whose 100+ bombing raids killed thousands, albeit during the moral fog we know as 'war'. A devout Christian, and latterly magnificent philanthropist, he made a similar sacrifice...until the war was over. Is Bond's 'war' ever over? Connery cannot really be beaten when it comes to the "who's best" debate, but Brosnan did a grand job in bringing 007 back from the low-point of the '80s, and Craig looks set to be the name most people will be talking about in another 40 years' time. Love to Alison (we received £250 from a trust for her ministry recently, and I have more applications planned for the coming year). Keep up the film fanaticism, and excellent reviews.
