Tongues

The bible mentions it a few times, but I am becoming more knowledgable about it in today's world, and becoming worried about it, because I have heard of how some people seem to produce cds of them worshipping God in tongues, which seems to be completely useless unless someone has the gift of interpretation to make use of what is being said.

I feel that speaking in tongues can be a private and personal worship and praise of God, and occasionally a message from God to us, if someone has the gift of interpretation.

What does everyone else think about it?

Re: Tongues

Speaking in tongues is rarely mentioned in the bible, maybe only a couple of times in the NT.

Speaking in tongues is a special gift which bypasses the usual thinking process. I don't think the bible defines its value particularly except to call it edifying or helpful... It does say it should not replace 'praying with the mind'. I think the value of it centres largely in its private use.

The problems that arise through public use of tongues is one of the reasons that Paul wrote to the Corinthian church. I think, this is why we find out that Paul has the gift himself because the Corinthians are using it badly. Paul says he would prefer to speak intelligibly (1Cor 14:18,19).

There is no general cover all statement. Use the gifts YOU have been given, and use them to give God the glory.

Re: Tongues

i think it is a great gift

but should be used for youself unless like on the day of pentacost it is used to speak to others in another language however you should only do that if you feel God is calling you to do this

but Fi i think you have got the right idea

Re: Tongues

I Would agree with you Fi. Speaking in tongues is a gift from God but it can scare people if there is no translation. Use your gifts to praise God but do not feel that you have to speak in Tongues.

Re: Tongues

Speaking in tongues is first mentioned in Acts chapters 1 & 2 when the Holy Spirit comes down on the new believers. It was predected in the book of Joel.

Joel 2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.

St Paul gives a further explanation of the gifts of the Spirit in his epistle 1 Corinthians chapters 12 & 14. Many people think that God has withdrawn these gifts in our times and heatedly defend their position but if that is so, why do many of my friends speak in tongues today ? Tongues are God's gifts to us; be thankful and use them if he has given them.

Re: Tongues

I would ask this question

On the day of penticost was it the gift of tongues or the gift of translation that was used?

I can not find any evidence in Scripture that it was the gift of tongues that was in action (such as described by Paul) but I can find evidence that they all heard in their own tongues Jew, Greek and Gentiles

Re: Tongues

Hey, im new to this forum but i just thought i would post my thoughts about speaking in tongues.
I believe that everyone has a spiritual gift from the Holy Spirit - it could be the gift of leadership, interpretation, speaking in tongues or many others. There are several passages in the bible that tell us about spirtual gifts, and one thing the bible deffinately makes clear is that we have the gifts to glorify God and not ourselves. So i think that people making cd's of themselves singing in tongues is a bit self-centered and seeking praise from people instead of God and its a bit fake really.
Soo...just remember that speaking in tongues is a God given gift and we should only use our gifts to glorify and praise Him
