I received this message after posting the differences of the three known trachea mite ( air sac mite) remedies available on lady gouldian finch canada ( yahoo group):

Ron,
Was reading your e-mail about effects of Ivermectin etc as well as usage of
Diatomaceous Earth- My understanding is that D,E, Abrades rather than
absorbs parasite shells/skins of snails, slugs etc.

Here was my reply:
Jan; Thank you for your query.
I would have to agree and disagree...this is what I read about it at wikipedia:
"Diatomite is also used as an insecticide, due to its physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the cuticle, the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion. This also works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs. However, since slugs inhabit humid environments, efficacy is very low."
I have also learned that finite amounts of silica are added to serrate the parasite once the lipid dehydration leave it defenceless.
It is mostly used in cattle and horse feeds to eradicate fly larvae that infest the intestinal tract.
The dosage sold for feed ( aka food grade) is about 1-1.5% crystalline silica ( the product that serrates the organism).
The type used in pesticide usage can be up to 30% crystalline silica.
The type used to purify pools is at about 60 % crystalline silica
The highest dosage recommended by the USDA for animal consumption is 3% crystalline silica as after that it can be very dusty and harm the lungs of the caretaker/livestock.
So my belief is that is absorbs the lipids as well as abrating the parasite at the same time.
Very effective at killing the parasite but not harming the bird provided as I stated the product used is food grade.
Also as I stated does not lose it's ability to eradicate the parasite as no immunity can be built up. It is in my opinion much cheaper and safer than chemical/medicinal products.
Mix 2-4% in dry seed 2x weekly and trachea mites will be a thing of the past.
We have it in protein complete for 2 years now ( 2 generations) and have found that to date we have had 0 trachea mite infestations or complications of digestion/lung ailments as we use food grade at recommended USDA dosages.
Hope this clarifies. :)
