Hello Ron,
When mating Gouldians, from how far back in the gene pool do mutation colors show up in subsequent clutches? I have a df red, sf yellow headed dilute male and a normal black headed hen that I've paired with unexpected results.
For as far back as my lines go (9 years), the hen has no yellow head or red heads in her background. All birds she has descended from have been black headed.
Their clutch contained 2 normal rh males, 2 dilute rh males and 1 yellow headed yellow hen. I expected the red headed males, and even a red headed hen, but not yellow headed. Is there something I have missed? I thought I had genetics down pretty well and thought that in order to produce yellow heads, both parents must carry the gene. Am I mistaken???
Your insight would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your time and the informative site!
