Greg; Firstly I would not mate them as only birds in prime condition should be mated, if they are not you risk egg binding, transference of illness from parents to chicks ( which results in higher chick mortality), DIS and infertile eggs. I am not surprised that the birds are not laying fertile eggs.
The male has viral infection and that should be looked after way before he is paired to mate.
The viral infection may be the cause of the infertility.
I am sure once the male is better the fertility rate will increase.
I do not think that raising eggs under fosters from a sick pair will yield much results as I said the male should be looked after and cured before any successful mating will transpire no mater how many eggs are laid.
I would also like to point out that this type of mating is very un beneficial to the hobby as a whole and does nothing to strengthen lines but weaken them.
If you or anyone you know is a habitual fosterer please et them know these simple well known facts
1- societies carry diseases over time they have grown immune to that gouldians have not
2-societies ( bengalese) stoop feeding a week or so before gouldian parents due and this can cause undue stress and illness to susceptible chicks.
3- because of these minor or major illnesses a bird at times cannot cope and succumbs to death, those that are exposed to illness by their carrier bengie parents and do not die usually become carriers.
4- festered birds usually come from parents that would not breed otherwise naturally and can harbour all kinds of problem issues ( sitting, feeding chicks, weaning successfully etc..). These problem birds are then sold and become are problem
So before, you or hey foster let them know these facts.
