Well I have a pair of birds that laid their first clutch last year
and raised three babies just fine. Now this summer they started
laying again, and have laid 3 clutches in a row of infertile eggs.
I am wondering why this is and if anyone can give me some tips on
what to do. They are in an outdoor flight with only a few other
birds; includng another pair that has laid 3 clutches of fertile
eggs; and these are their very first clutches! So the environment
and the diet seem not to be an issue. For their first clutch they
used a box that I could see into and I saw that they were definitely
mating- and on more than one day. So I was very surprised when the
eggs turned out to be infertile. I have been taking the eggs and
putting them under socities; so they have laid the clutches in a
fairly quick sucession; only about 2 weeks between clutches. The
male has had a stubborn eye cold since late last year. He used to
seem sickly, but all summer long he has been aggressive and
territorial and courting the female very much; in short he doesn't
seem sick at all except for his swollen eye.
Needless to say I am very dissappointed as these are my only pair of
bond and breeding yellows!
Is there anything I can do, or should I split them up and try and
pair the female with another male?
How long would it take to get her to bond with a new male?
I understand that to get a new bonding, the original paired birds
should be placed so that they cannot see each other, although if
they hear each other that is ok.
Input is greatly appreciated, Greg |
