I am always asked how can you tell the breeding condition of a hen.
I have learned there are three tell tale signs your hen is ready to breed.
Sign 1:
-the tip of the beak in normals and melanistic birds goes a pitch
black ( only attach nest when beak is completely black)
Sign 2:
-rump is pushed upwards,
Sign 3:
-tail drops more vertically
a sign found in some hens is :
-that they will carry nesting material
-sing to the cocks,
Non Melanistic Hens (pgb both factors, and the silver mutation)
Signs of Breeding Condition :
Beak goes a pearl white and tip colour intensifies ( much like the male)
The other three signs are exactly the same.
This is the time that the nest box should be introduced.
Any earlier and you may experience:
-hens that reject cocks because they try to breed to early, and then
ignore the **** bird most of the season
-hens hormones fail to peak because of the confusion and the hormonal
imbalance causes balding of the entire head.
-hens lay and experience egg binding because copulation was successful
but hens hormonal balance was not at it's peak.
THis is the time the nest box should be introduced
