Eeugh - Ticks
I brought my own visitor back with me from the Picnic series... Everyone should be aware that in addition to the usual Kielder blood-suckers (pesky midgies) there are also Ticks around. yuck. yuck. yuck. If anyone doesn't know the recommended method of safe removal is to get tweezer and pull straight up from as near the skin as possible. This stops the tick from regurgitating into the host and helps prevent the myriad of rather disgusting infections you can pick up. Still yuck

Thanks Nancy for the warning. I got one once (not at Kielder) and didn't notice it till the next day - and I'd been told there were ticks in the area. They seem to be quite unobtrusive when attached, I'm going to check all over now! |

Christina got a tick, on the back of her neck, the year before last. She got it on a walk from the dam to the "Bus shelter". After speaking to the on call doctor, at Bellingham, he inststed that we take her to Hexham hospital to have it removed properly (great fun on a Saturday!) She caused quite a stir as "everyone and his wife" wanted to come in and watch her have it removed. The funniest thing was watching the young doctor have to get his text book out to see how to do it! The tick was then examined under a magnifying glass to check it was all there, as they can often leave their jaws in their victim, which can also cause a nasty infection!!

I'm a bit of an expert on ticks. Don't ask Anyway should anyone be interested the current best practice is outlined at the following website. http://www.tickpreventionweek.org/remove/ Whilst a local infection from debris is unpleasant the long term effects of infection with Borreliosis can be catastrophic - and certainly play havoc with the sailing season, so be aware. Also don't sit on long grass in a t-shirt and jeans. Doh! |
