Drizzle
Hi As anyone who was at Kielder today will testify - drizzle seems to wet more than normal rain. I have theorised as to why this is the case and I have come to the conclusion there is less run off - drizzle soaks in - rains just runs off. The situation is entirely analagous to being told its the wrong type of rain after a thunderstorm during a drought. In fact I was convinced that someone must have tried to prove that drizzle is wetter than rain - a quick google search did not confirm this but I did find this bizarre article - http://www.null-hypothesis.co.uk/article/51. It suggests that jogging is better than walking or sprinting to keep dry in the rain. So if you want to stay dry tomorrow at Kielder - don't go too fast or too slow. And don't be misled into thinking its not raining when there is drizzle(as Richard found out today) - sometimes the water molecules are so impercetibly small that by the time you realise its raining its too late... Are banal messages such as this allowed on the forum ?

Neil In the good old days when I used to venture out of the office the workforce would always complain about working in the rain. My response was always to suggest that if it was wet rain they could take shelter or be paid additional money called "wet time". The definition of wet/dry rain and subsequent payments was as follows; If rain is falling at more than 2 inch centres it can not be deemed to be wet rain. If rain is falling at less than 2 inch centres and has been measured as such no payment of wet time can be allowed. This is clearly because if it is dry enough to measure the density of rainfall it is dry enough to work. All the above is open to the interpretation of the management and will change depending on the weather. Although less scientific than your research it allows the management to remain correct (and dry) regardless of the weather conditions |
