Windward/Leeward - Thank you

We had a hugely successful winward/leeward event tis weekend and all competitors looked more than happy with many seeking us out afterwards to let us know. We had a great venue with reasonable/good weather, superb food (as always) and excellent organisation to provide just what competitors require. As usual we had excellent patrol cover and superb committee boat organisation. We can be proud of such an event.

The Cherubs turned out in force and we saw more than we had seen for many years. They have enjoyed themselves so much that they are asking if next year they can stay for the whole of the following week for a training camp/holiday!

In all we had 41 competitors on Saturday with a few more from the club joining in on Sunday. This is an excellent turnout - particularly given the weather forecast and the distance some had travelled. More than one competitor commented that the cost of fuel was now forcing them to think twice about which events they were selecting to travel to. In this kind of environment we need to continue to provide a top quality friendly event to continue to attract visitors as these events provide us with much needed income for development and to help keep our fees reasonable.

Many many thanks to all those involved in organising this event and for those of you taking part. Your time affort is much appreciated.

Re: Windward/Leeward - Thank you

From the competitors side we (myself & Tom) would like to thank everyone who supported the weekend.

What we lack in skill is compensated for by effort. So the refuelling from the galley was essential to the weekend.

I also need to mention the excellent job the on water crew did. We were taken by surprise at the speed that the races were turned around. Courses were excellent & made the most of the great water we have at Kielder.

From my quick calculation we had eleven current or former, World/ Euro or National champions on the water.

Re: Windward/Leeward - Thank you

Paul is being modest as he and Tom did very well this weekend, coming 15th overall in the SSR fleet of 35 (Best Kielder result)and in the 49er fleet of 5 boats came 3,4,4,2,2,4. Impressive.

We had some really lovely visitors who were superb sailors and their friendly, appreciative, helpful manner made it a delight for me to help out this weekend.

I enjoy helping at these events, when we not sailing ourselves, as it gives something back to our club and the whole network of British sailing. I add my thanks to everyone else who put in long hours of support in the committee boat, patrol boats (both cold places!) and especially to those who supported me in the galley on Sunday (warmer but on the go all the time) when I frequently disappeared to enter results, etc. Nancy and Gundi are stars and I want everyone to know.

Everyone was fantastic throughout the weekend. As Michael has said, it makes one proud to be part of Team Kielder.

Re: Windward/Leeward - Thank you

I think we ought to mention the performance of the home boats. We don't have many skiff sailors in the club, but those we do have showed that they can do the business.

In a fleet of 35 of which the front runners are really very good indeed, Paul and Tom came 15th in the 49er, and Ferg 17th in virtually his first outing in the Musto.

Chris and Phil only sailed the ISO on sunday but got a 15th in race 6.

In the non-skiff fleet we could have done with some more home competition, but after such a ghastly start to the season weather-wise it was perhaps inevitable that not many were ready to dip a toe in. Steve Ludman and Karen and Neil Gammack deserve great credit for giving it a go. The Sarah/Chris Herbert combo and Steve Jarvis (sunday only) got some good scores, and the scratch team of Steve and Nicola showed promise.

I would like to add my thanks to Steve's to the many on the organisation side who contributed time, hard work and skill to make it all happen.

Re: Windward/Leeward - Thank you

I'd like to echo Paul's comments especially, from a competitor point of view.

The race management at Kielder is second to none. After 3 years of SSR Grand Prix sailing the only other event where the race team has done such a good job was East Lothian, and thats impressive! We had quick turn around of races which is especially tough given the conditions. So big thanks to Mike, Ian and the rest of the team.

The catering again was excellent, and one of the most important parts of a great open meeting! So thanks to all the different people who helped out there.

I think everyone had a fantastic time and i would be suprised if the Skiffs dont return in coming years.

Cheers
Fergus

Re: Windward/Leeward - Thank you

Karen and I really enjoyed the racing and the atmosphere at the club on Sunday. In fact, so smitten with the whole thing that we're back for more racing on Sunday. Two races in two weeks - this must be a record for us.
Once again thanks for all the support and encouragement.

Re: Windward/Leeward - Thank you

Hello Kielder,

Thanks for yet another great weekend of sailing. A good time was had by all from Sunderland, and we can't wait to come back. Pity it was so cold, (or was that just me), hopefully the water will heat up a bit in time for September.

See you again soon!

Don't forget, Asymmetric Open at Sunderland on 19th & 20th July - All asymmetric classes welcome,
Then our annual Dinghy Regatta on the 16th & 17th August - All classes welcome!

Richard
