Sailing down under

While you chaps have been sailing in the snow, we've just had a happy afternoon racing a Flying Fifteen on the Swan River, Perth, Western Australia.

31 degrees

We were resoundingly last in a competitive fleet of 6 boats. Boy did we feel rusty after a 4 month layoff. I longed for my trapeze. Hiking in hobbles was a whole new experience. During each tack Viola would say 'Trust the Hobbles'! 'I am, I am' said I, gritting my teeth but it turned out she was talking to herself as she hurled herself gamely
over the side.

We were also the smallest boat weaving our way through fleets of Dragons, Etchells, and big yachts.

It is a fabulous setting and much beer was drunk in the sun afterwards, with screeching parrots overhead. We get another go next weekend. Will we be back the week after??? Hmmm!

Keep scraping the snow off

Re: Sailing down under

Oh there you go you, you just had to rub it in didn't you! Whiles we have horizontal snow at 77 knots you are drinking beer in the sun (the racing being entirely incidental). Well I think next year the winter programme for KWSC should be sailing in Perth for us all. Now where did I put that lottery ticket?

Glad to hear you are having a great time - you probably won't want to come back!

Re: Sailing down under

Sounds like great fun Mike - all this training for the next power drinking session! Just watch your fingers this time!
Rebecca came over to the Lakes with her new boyfriend last weekend. Given that he is from Brisbane we thought some encouragement might not be amiss!
And we have snow in the Lakes with the Old Man looking at least 500' taller than normal. Managed to play out in the stuff a few times in between working on Jennifer. Hope to be ready for Blithfield - see you both there we hope.

Re: Sailing down under

Hi Mike - You don't know what your missing back home. I've just got home from taking the guys through the final Safety boat session with Dave. Today I've capsized a Feva maybe 15 times, a Dart 18 3 times & had numerous rescues on a windsurfing board.

Compared to the last couple weeks, the water is almost tropical. We have the added advantage of no, Salt Water Croc's, Great Whites, Tigers, Sea Snakes, King Browns, Red Backs, Taipans.......

Re: Sailing down under

Yes Alec, Blithfield will be our first Osprey outing - that'll be interesting!!

Yesterday we went out to Rottnest Island in glorious sunshine, swam in the sea, put down the crayfish pots and slept on the boat. We woke to a thunderstorm and very heavy rain - not what the locals are expecting at this time of year apparently. Also windy and wavy. We retrieved the cray pots in classic Kielder mark laying conditions, except quite a bit warmer. Got 3 crayfish - very nice for lunch. The trip home this morning was foggy on bit of a lumpy sea - the second worst Rottnest crossing our friends have ever done they said, the worst being 12 years ago!! We're being accused of bringing British weather.

Had a dolphin swimming along side on the way into Fremantle harbour which was nice. No sharks or snakes yet.

It's tough. Don't know how we'll survive another week of this

Re: Sailing down under

Ahh, it all comes back to me, I spent my honeymoon on a yacht I chartered in Sydney harbour. We sailed around the harbour for a few hours and watched the sun go down over the Opera house while drinking champers. Would have gone for a swim from the yacht as it was as hot as hell but for two reasons:

A) There are sharks
B)I can't swim

Rottness Island is where our friends who live in Sydney were married so I have seen the pics!

Are you drinking middis or schoners?

Re: Sailing down under

The last time I sailed out of Sydney harbour twas nearly midnight on a small (32000 tonne) Tanker heading for Singapore to load and then on to Fiji. And the answer is no I don't (though Jo might as she was with me) miss those days at all at all.

Re: Sailing down under

Lots of nice Ozzy wine. And the occasional beer whisky etc. Just like at home really but 30 degrees C warmer.

No we didn't go cray fishing from a Flying Fifteen!! It is a beautiful 46 foot motor cruiser. One careful previous owner who sank it on the reef. Our host Ron bought the hulk from the insurance company and rebuilt it. It's the life...

Racing the fifteens again tomorrow, but this time crewing/helming locals, so we might do better!

See you all next week.

Re: Sailing down under

Michael is sounding rather smug!

So today it has been pouring with rain, and only a feeble wind from the north so that all the set courses would be mainly reaching - unsurprisingly the decision was taken NOT to sail and we went to the Maritime Museum instead to look at Australia 2. Also the most incredible early 18 foot skiff from the 1920's - the boom extended another 18 foot behind the boat!

Be seeing you all very soon....

Viola
