Don't come to London to buy sex, cops warn
RANDY RICHMOND, SUN MEDIA Two crackdowns on prostitution in two areas of the city have led to charges against 39 people, including several Johns from out of town. The sweeps of Old East Village and the Wellington Street corridor south of Horton should send a message to out-of-towners heading to London to buy sex, police said today. “We want the message to go out: If you come to London and are looking to break the law, we are looking for you,” Const. Amy Phillipo said. Complaints of chronic prostitution from merchants and residents prompted police to launch Project SONAR (Solicitation in Our Neighbourhood Affects Revitalization) in Old East and Wellington Road south of Horton Street from Nov. 27 to Dec. 14. That project led to 42 charges, mostly solicitation for the purpose of prostitution, against 33 people. Of those, 23 were Johns looking to buy sex and 10 were prostitutes, Phillipo said. Four men charged were from out of town, including one from Mississauga, she said. Two people were caught in an indecent act. Police took another swipe at prostitution in the same areas last week. This time they nabbed one prostitute and five Johns, Phillipo said. |
