'Prolific madam' in Lower Mainland pleads guilty to 2 charges
A woman who has been described as one of the most prolific madams in Greater Vancouver pleaded guilty to two prostitution-related charges in a Richmond provincial court on Tuesday. Zhe Nai Xu, 42, of Richmond was facing seven charges but pleaded guilty to one count of keeping a common bawdy house and one count of living off the avails of prostitution. Zhe Nai Xu is apparently looking forward to starting a new career. (CBC) The Crown is seeking 12 to 18 months of house arrest, and wants to seize one of the brothels owned by Xu, who is also known as "Pinky." Sentencing will take place in December. Investigators claimed Xu, who was "one of the most prolific madams in the Lower Mainland," was taking in $1.3 million a year. Mark Thompson, Xu's lawyer, said on Tuesday the defence will not contest the forfeit order. "She's pleaded guilt to certain things and they speak for themselves," Thompson said outside court. Thompson said Xu is looking forward to starting a new career upon graduation from cosmetology school soon. Police had been aware of her activities for years and attempts to arrest her dated back to 2003, when she was investigated in connection with the operation of an alleged bawdy house in the area of Main Street and 18th Avenue in Vancouver. She was arrested several more times in the next three years, but no charges were laid because of a lack of evidence, police said. In January of this year, police traced her to a house in Richmond and finally charged her. Police estimated as many as 150 customers a month came through one of her houses, where massages with sexual add-ons were offered for about $180. The women who worked for Xu were mostly from Korea in their 20s and early 30s and were brought in as tourists. None have said they were forced into prostitution. |
