Sex workers alarmed in Vancouver

An arrest in Monday's murder of Nicole Parisien, a Kitsilano-based masseuse, has done nothing to quell a relief worker's claim that selling sex indoors is as dangerous as walking a stroll.

"The murder of this woman is an example of why moving women indoors ... would not prove any safer," said Rape Relief & Women's Shelter spokesperson Daisy Kler. "This murder could not have been prevented."

Parisien's body was found in a lot north of 1450 Chestnut St. after police arrived to investigate a reported break and enter at 3:46 a.m.

Vancouver resident Andrew William Evans is facing a charge of second-degree murder. The 25-year-old turned himself in to police in Calgary on Tuesday. Evans has been in Vancouver police custody since Wednesday and will make his first court appearance Sept. 5.

In the meantime, Vancouver police vice unit is joining in the investigation of the 33-year-old's death to determine whether more charges can be laid in connection with the unit being used as a bawdy house.
