2 charged in brutal sex worker assault, robbery -- Toronto
A young man and a 16-year-old girl have been charged in connection with a vicious attack and robbery of a sex-trade worker in downtown Toronto last month. The two were arrested Thursday, with the girl facing theft-related charges and the man charged with assault, among other charges. On April 18, the 42-year-old victim was bound and gagged then sexually assaulted, police said. Her attacker forced her to disclose her bank card PINs then kept her hostage while someone else emptied her accounts. "She is very depressed. She is fearful of going outside her apartment at this time," said Wendy Leaver, a Toronto police detective. "I did call her last night when the arrests were made and she broke into tears. She was so relieved," she said, adding that sex workers often don't believe police will take their complaints seriously. YouTube has been credited with helping police crack the case. After Crime Stoppers posted surveillance images of the suspects to the popular videosharing website, they received an anonymous call that led to the arrests. Earl Mackeigan, 23, of Toronto has been charged with choking to overcome resistance, forcible confinement, sexual assault causing bodily harm, threatening death, robbery and assault. He is scheduled to appear in court next Wednesday. The 16-year-old girl, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime, two counts of fraudulently possessed credit card data, and theft. She is scheduled to appear in court on May 28. |
