Bad Date in Court
A repeat rapist who admitted to strangling and raping two sex trade workers will be facing a dangerous offender bid --and an indefinite sentence, court heard yesterday. Wayne Edward Mumford, 30, who is the son of infamous AIDS-infected pedophile Donald Mumford, pleaded guilty yesterday to two counts of aggravated sexual assault and choking two sex trade workers in separate Parkdale attacks last June. In a nine-day span in June, 2005, Mumford approached two women, one aged 41, the other 42, asking each one for sex for cash. Neither consented. One agreed to take him to another sex trade worker while the other, a retired prostitute, was going for coffee when he tagged along and then blind-sided her with a punch and choked her. Mumford isolated each victim, violently choked them and forced them into sex acts, court heard yesterday. Both feared being killed and one bit his hand as she fought for her life. Mumford had spent every day of a 9 1/2-year sentence in jail for a previous aggravated sexual assault. Mumford's original eight-year sentence was boosted by an extra 18 months when he was convicted of assaulting and forcibly confining a female jail guard in Millhaven prison in November 2002 and of another sexual assault in 1998. Donald Mumford, 52, the accused's father, is a notorious sex offender and pedophile who has been diagnosed with HIV, syphilis and hepatitis. He was released into the Queen St.-Roncesvalles Ave. community in November 2002, a decision that spurred some 200 area residents to pack a meeting to protest the move to police. Donald Mumford had also assaulted two gay prostitutes. Wayne Mumford was only free for a few months and was still under release conditions when he committed his crimes. Crown attorney Elaine Strosberg said she will be seeking a dangerous offender application against Wayne Mumford, which if granted, would mean an indefinite prison sentence. He will be back in court on May 15. |

A pimp who earned more than $400,000 running a sex service in Mississauga won't learn today if he's going to jail. The sentencing hearing for Imani Nakpamgi, 26, of Niagara Falls, was supposed to get underway this morning in a Brampton courtroom before Justice Hugh Atwood. But legal issues forced an adjournment of the case until a later date. Nakpamgi pleaded guilty two weeks ago to human trafficking and living off the avails of prostitution. He admitted to escorting and setting up appointments for two teenage girls he had hired to perform prostitution services. Court heard that over a 26-month period, between 2005 and 2007, Nakpamgi drove the girls, who were 14 and 15 at the time, to several Mississauga hotels to meet men and perform sexual acts for cash. The older girl earned $360,000 for Nakpamgi, court was told. "He became her pimp," Crown prosecutor John Raftery told court, noting both girls "performed various acts of prostitution and gave their earnings to the accused." The older girl, now 18, was robbed at gunpoint during a date with a customer, court heard. She wanted out of the business, but Nakpamgi used "intimidation and threats of violence" to keep her working, Raftery said. He threatened to kidnap the girl's brother and said he would break her nose if she left, court heard. On one occasion, the girl tried to run away, but Nakpamgi "chased her down and assaulted her," Raftery said. Nakpamgi told the girl she had to pay a $50,000 exit fee if she wanted out. She managed to flee from Nakpamgi last fall, and contacted police. The younger girl had been reported missing by the Peel Children's Aid Society, where she was a ward. She earned close to $65,000 for Nakpamgi, court head. Acting on a tip, Peel Regional Police sent an undercover officer to a Mississauga hotel last Dec. 6. The officer, posing as a customer, was greeted at the door by the younger teen. Police later arrested Nakpamgi. Investigators determined that the girls' services were being advertised on the internet. They later discovered several digital photos of the girls, who were scantily-clad in the images, in Nakpamgi's home. |
