Maarten:
I suppose you are talking about the bearing in the rear bulkhead of the engine room. If this is so, I can tell you Marie's former owner took it away (date unknown) and I have run the engine since I bought the banjer without it (14 years). I have had no problems, excepting that about five years ago I had to replace one of the engine silentblocks that was broken. But I don't think this was related to the lack of the bearing.
I don't think the bulkhead bearing is a thrust bearing, because this kind of bearings are usually anchored to the engine beds rather than to wood bulkheads, nor it is necessary at all. My opinion is that this bearing can be removed without damage to the engine-shaft installation. Even more, I think it's no good at all for the shaft to have three bearings (This one and two in the shaft stern tube), being the engine mounted on silentblocks, as it is. But you can ask Ton Koot and Dees de Smet who have more experience than I do with shaft bearings matters.
Best regards,
Guillermo. |
