INTERFERENCE AT POWERED SITE
I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY JEFF FISCHER, THAT CHANNEL 80 HAS INTERFERENCE STRECHING FROM DORCHESTER TO LYME REGIS. THIS HE HAS CHECKED ON HIS MOBILE MONITER, THE FREQUENCY IS THERE FOR YOU TO USE BUT BE AWARE THAT THE CLUB HAS INFORMED YOU OF THE RISK. PHIL |

Sadly, I witnesed on Sunday (23rd) at the Pymore power site, the demise of a newly built model that 'appeared' to be a victim of this interference. The model was inexplicably 'lost' by the pilot and was badly damaged. Luckily no persons or property were involved but it serves as a reminder to us all that we do not monopolise the airwaves and interference is something to be very aware of at all times. BrianG |

Thinking a bit deeper on this topic, I have a recollection of a magazine article I read some time ago concerning interference from other sources and one of those treated with great suspicion was the agricultural electric fence. As we know, one of these has recently been installed alongside the length of the strip. The power supply can generate large peaks of electricity and these just MAY be enough to cause a problem in extreme cases....room for thought perhaps. Tom's Texan recently had an unexplained incident in a similar location to Sunday's model (i.e. that end of the field...) also Ed's D7 met it's end at that end too.... True there is 'something' on Channel 80 as we saw on Jeffs frequency scanner and we are close to the coast where even the Military cannot be ruled out on odd occasions. Just a few thoughts to put in the think tank... BrianG |

I have been to the site during the week with the club scanner and no interferance was found to be present on any channels. Jeff's scanner was a professional set up able to pin point to a finer accuracy then the SMS scanner, My best advice is to avoid 80 at the present time until i have managed to check out the frequency over a 4 week period. happy landings phil |

Firstly Phil what a great improvement to the site. Reference the interference on channel 80. I use a very sensitive receiver which will picks up back ground noise on all the channels. However channel 80 back ground noise is always higher than any other channel. I have scanned our fequency band at Dorchester and Weymouth and 80 backgroud noise has always been higher. As far as electric fences are concerned there has been a debate recently on the BMFA forum. Nothing firm on that one I am afraid. If you want to explore the noise on 80, Phil, I could contact the local radio amateurs who could possibly help establish the source and type of the noise. Jeff |

Hi Jeff, I agree..Phil has done a good job on this re-vamp to the site....all it needs now for the Forum 'Button' to be moved further up the front page then hopefully more memberes will see it and use the Forum...... Anyway, I digress, back to the point, this interference certainly is a cause for concern and I for one would be interested if you could dig deeper on this with the Amateur Radio 'Bods'.....I have contacted an ex Naval Radio Op and he has not come up with anything affirmative but he did say that considering our close proximity to Naval firing ranges, Portland and Lyme Bay 'exercises both sea and air that if there were to be 'Military Activity' in the immediate vicinty then our low power signals for model use could well be swamped from frequencies transmitted from more powerful sources Hopefully we are worrying over nothing sinister here....there has been speculation of course but I feel sure that the 'noise' on Channel 80 is something we can all live with once we have an idea as to what it might be. It cannot be ruled out that the loss of that model that we both witnessed on Sunday last .....just could have been 'pilot error'.....however it would be nice to know what you can dig out Jeff.
